How a CD calculator works

A CD calculator projects how much a certificate of deposit will be worth at maturity, and how much interest you earn, based on your deposit, the APY, the term length, and how often interest compounds.

How is CD maturity value calculated?

Maturity value = P x (1 + (APY/100)/n)^(n x years), where P is the deposit, APY is the annual percentage yield, n is the number of compounding periods per year, and years is the term. For example, $10,000 at 5% APY compounded annually for 5 years grows to about $12,763. Estimates only, not financial advice.

How much interest will I earn on a CD?

Interest earned is the maturity value minus your original deposit. On a $10,000 CD at 5% APY for 5 years, the maturity value is about $12,763, so you earn roughly $2,763 in interest before taxes.

Does compounding frequency change my CD earnings?

When a bank quotes APY, it already reflects compounding, so the headline yield is comparable across banks. Choosing daily, monthly, or annual compounding in this tool shows how the same nominal rate accrues differently, with more frequent compounding earning slightly more.
